Techniques of Breast Augmentation
There are two techniques for breast augmentation, silicone implants or fat grafting.
For silicone implants, one can choose between textured, nanotextured and smooth implants.
Breast Fat Grafting
One method for breast augmentation is fat grafting. Excess fat from another part of the body is removed using liposuction techniques. This fat is treated and injected to the breasts. This is a natural breast enlargement and results are almost permanent. So you get two benefits at the end, one a more contoured or toned looks at the body part
from where fat is removed and the other obviously is fuller and firmer breasts. However, fat grafting has one disadvantage, that some amount (upto 30 to 50% fat) can get reabsorbed after transfer to breasts. Hence this is usually chosen for patients who wants half to one cup size increase in their breast size. For more than one cup size increase, silicone implants are preferred.
Textured Implants
Textured implants are rough and give traction to the surface that keeps them from moving around within the breast pocket created by the surgeon. Though textured implants are used to lower the chances of capsular contracture, they can have more chances to leak and ripple when compared to smooth implants. Textured implants have also been associated, although very rarely, with a type of cancer called Breast Implant associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.
Smooth Implants
Smooth Implants have an outer silicone rubber shell that is smooth and therefore do not attach to the body tissues surrounding it. This makes them move freely within the breast pocket created by the surgeon making them look more natural. Smooth implants last longer than the textured implants and have fewer chances of rippling and leaking. Smooth implants are also considered safe and have not shown any association with any type of cancer till date.
Nano-textured Implants
Also known as next-generation breast implants, nano-textured are the most revolutionary form of breast augmentation devices. Very few clinics offer nano-textured choice. They come with a true monobloc construction with visual barrier layer indicator. The silicone gel-filled inside is the most advanced form of gel that renders most natural look and feel. The most prominent and beneficial feature of these breast implants is that they come with a nano-textured surface to reduce the risk of capsular contraction. These are primarily round implants with ergonomix shape mimicking the natural anatomical shape of breasts. This also prevents the risk of rotation.
