Safety measures for breast augmentation

Complications

Breast Augmentation risks are not very common however any operation is not exempt of any complication risks which are a reality as follows:

  1. Hemorrhage: Clinical scientifically any surgical act involves the accumulation of blood (haematoma) in the interior of the tissues. Generally this situation does not require any medical treatment, as these blood haematomas become reabsorbed, unaided, within a few weeks. However in 1 out of 10 cases, the haematoma can manage to deform the breast shape, which makes a second operation necessary, in order to extract the excess of the haematoma, and the breast will be able to continue the same development, achieving the desired result.
  2. Infection: You will usually be given antibiotics during and after surgery. If (despite this 1/500 clinically-statistical chance) any sort of infectious process becomes established, it is obligatory that the implant should be removed. There is a 3-6 months waiting period before considering the re-insertion of implants.
  3. Capsular Contraction: With the latest technical advances in silicone implants, it has been possible to reduce the hardening of the breasts by2%. If this complication should arise to such a degree that the breast is deformed and the patient complains of hardness, a closed capsulotomy can be performed, which consists of braking the capsule around the implant by means of a manoeurve with the hands, carried out in this case by the surgeon, as if it were a case of a hand massage. When the hardness persists or it is so great that it causes the patient discomfort, and if it appears in a contracted exaggerated shape, there is no alternative but to operate again, remove the implant and capsule.
  4. Asymmetry: As has been said before, no woman possesses real symmetry in both breasts. By means of the use of implants of different volume and dimensions or fat grafting, we try to even out small differences, as far as this is possible, but inevitably these discrepancies between the two breasts will remain. As indication of retouching in order to achieve perfect symmetry is highly unlikely, given that this is practically impossible.
  5. Change in Sensitivity: 80% of the patients maintain the same sensitivity after surgery. In case15% of cases it goes down, though in these cases patients frequently recover total sensitivity after a few months. For5% of patients (almost never with fat grafting), loss of sensitivity is difficult to recover and there is no clinical-scientific solution available.
  6. Discomfort or Pain: It is infrequent for pain to be felt, though in some cases, especially when the implant is placed below the pectoral muscle, discomfort and even some pain may appear during the first days after the operation and which can disappear by reducing the caffeine intake and by taking about 1000 units of vitamin E or paracetamol.
  7. Scars: The aesthetic quality of the scarring depends principally on each patient’s own organism. Anaesthetic scars on the mammary areola tend to present different pigmentation during the first 6 months and with time become concealed, without the need for re-touching. In cases of fat grafting there are hardly visible concealed scars.
  8. Implant rupture: The implant rupture occurs in less than 2% according statistics, and is almost always discovered by mammography , ultrasound and MRI, being this last one, the most reliable test. After the rupture of an implant, is advisable to remove and replace it with a new one . Nevertheless, patient should not be alarmed as the current content of the implants is a Silicone cohesive gel (implants placed since 2000); therefore, you have time to decide when would be the best moment to remove it.
  9. Breast Implant-Associated Anapaestic Cell Lymphoma: is a recently described malignancy which has been seen in few patients across the globe who have had textured silicone implants. As of date there is no case reported in literature of this disease with smooth or nanotextured implants. So we advise our patients to choose smooth or nanotextured implants due to this reason.

Safety measures for breast augmentation

With a regular, perfectly healthy patient, breast augmentation does not cause any problems or hampers the breast health in any manner. It is an entirely safe procedure. Scientific researchers have proven that a woman’s autoimmune has nothing to do with breast augmentation surgery. Neither it causes any systemic disorders. Yet, it always remains necessary to understand and take safety measures beforehand, rather than regretting later. As suggested, recommended and advised by the surgeon, it is important to follow the instructions and choose implants, surgery method and incisions based on his diagnosis of your condition and requirement.

There are other factors to be considered before going under the knife:

  • Breast augmentation surgery is not a permanent solution. One may require a repeat after a few years, to replace one or both implants.
  • After the surgery, if the patient loses or gains weight, it may affect the appearance of breasts to a great extent.
  • Getting pregnant after the implants will definitely influence the retention and appearance of breasts. It is advisable to get breast augmentation when one is done with pregnancies and childbirths.
  • One must go for regular examination post-surgery, to evaluate the breast health and to keep a check on the condition of breast tissue.
